Unsure whether or not you need a commercial vacuum cleaner? There are a great many reasons why choosing this powerful type of vacuum is important if you are planning to do a certain type of job. Before you can understand the differences between commercial vacuum cleaners and consumer grade vacuums, you should first understand exactly how these machines work.
At first glance it is fairly obvious how vacuums, commercial or otherwise, operate. They use powerful suction to remove debris and other dirt particles from either hard or carpeted surfaces. This is common sense, what you may not know is that vacuums are actually operated by a motor. This vacuum motor is nothing like the one you have in your car, it is a simple electric motor that can usually be found in the head of the vacuum. When this motor begins to work it does one thing and one thing alone, it powers what is called the spinner fan. This fan is what creates the powerful suction that helps the vacuum do its job. Not only does the motor create powerful suction, via the fan, but it is also what spins the brush, or beater bar. The vacuum’s brush helps to scoop debris into the suction tube and also beats the carpet. This helps loosen any dirt that has become trapped. Once the debris passes through the suction tube it hits a filter. This filter allows air to pass out but contains dirt and dust. This way the air can leave the machine, without letting out the dirt, and allow for continuous suction.
Now that you know how vacuums work, you should know the differences between consumer grade and commercial vacuums. A consumer vacuum can be purchased in any store that sells such appliances. Consumer grade vacuums come in a few different varieties, styles, shapes and sizes. These residential vacuums are not the most powerful cleaning utensils but they will do the job. Commercial vacuums will be much more powerful and have a few more options available. Commercial grade vacuums are built to last and withstand much more abuse than standard vacuum cleaners. These powerful vacuum cleaners, unlike their consumer grade counterparts, will have two motors. One to operate the suction fan and one to power the beater bar. This allows for a very powerful cleaning machine.
When choosing a commercial vacuum cleaner, you should first consider the power level you are looking for. Although, they are all more powerful than their residential cousins, there is still a difference in power from on vacuum to the next. It all depends on the motor, a more powerful motor means a stronger and more powerful vacuum. Aside from the power, you will also need to choose which type of commercial vacuum cleaner you want. There three main types of commercial vacuums, upright, wide and backpack.
- Upright commercial vacuums look much like their consumer grade cousins , just a little bit bigger. These machines can be broken into two groups, self propelled and standard. Self propelled vacuums are propelled forward by the machines motor, while other types are not. Of course, a powerful self propelled vacuum will cost a bit more. This is something that needs to be carefully considered. If you are in need of a commercial grade vacuum, chances are that you have rather large jobs in mind for your tool. Attempting to push and pull a standard vacuum over a prolonged period of time can become very strenuous. Where as, self propelled vacuums do a large amount of the physical work for you.
- Wide commercial vacuum cleaners are almost exactly the same as the upright models but with a wider head. This allows you to cover more space with a single motion. These types of vacuums are perfect for very large jobs, where covering 150% to 200% more floor space will save you a considerable amount of time.
- Backpack vacuums are strapped behind the operator. The cleaning head is attached to a tube that is connected to the main part of the machine, or the backpack. This is where the motor and vacuum cleaner bag is held. Backpack vacuums make moving around much easier and alleviate some of the strain on the arms and shoulders. These types of vacuums are usually less powerful than the uprights but are much more convenient for certain situations.
If you are looking into commercial vacuum cleaners, this is a lot of information to take in. You have a large variety of models to choose from. How do you choose the right one for you? There are a few things that you should consider before making your decision. There are a large variety of manufacturers to choose from but you shouldn’t make your choice by name brand. You should consider what you are going to be using the machine for, what features you will need. You will need to consider what types of jobs you will be using the vacuum for. How much power you do need? Will you need a vacuum with a wider head? Will you need multiple attachments? Once you know exactly what it is that you are looking for, choosing the right commercial vacuum cleaner will be much easier.
